Tanja
Bolenz is a lettercutter, calligrapher and bookbinder
who lives on Denman Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Her work includes lettering, cut by hand into stone,
written with a broad-edged nib or quill on paper,
or painted with a brush on a variety of surfaces,
including paper, wood and cloth. Her hand-bound
books also contain lettering.
Each piece of work, whether written, painted or
carved,
requires its own unique design. The chosen text
strongly influences the design of the lettering.
The lettering design may also be enhanced through
the variety of tools employed. Each tool possesses
its own physical qualities, and each presents different
challenges when applied to different media.
Tanja’s aim is to go on exploring letter
design, texture and the meaning of text in stone,
on paper, and in book form.
Tanja has taken part in a number of exhibitions
in Canada, the US, Britain and Belgium. Her work
is in private collections in Canada, Britain, Germany,
Italy and France.
